Good evening Ms. George,
I am reaching out to say thank you for writing such a wonderful book. My name is XYZ and I am a married, 49-year-old mother of a 17-year-old daughter and 21-year-old son. On July 14, 2023, I came home from lunch as I do every day, to let our two dogs out and hang out with them. After putting the dogs in the house to head back to work, I headed down my driveway to get the mail from our mail lady. I was told I dropped to the ground. One week later I woke from a drug induced coma to be told I had a 100% blocked widow-maker and had a stent placed in my LAD. Luckily my neighbors were out along with our wonderful mail lady, and they called 911 immediately and I received CPR from the Oakland County Sheriff that was on the way to another call when something told him to go to my call instead. I had completely stopped breathing. The Fire Department EMTs told my husband I was pretty much dead for 20 minutes and they thought they may be able to get me to the hospital alive in time for my family to say their goodbyes to me. I ended up being called the miracle on the seventh floor at Ascension Hospital in Rochester. A little daunting to be called a miracle.
I was released from the hospital on July 24th, 10 days after my heart attack, which I referred to it as my “accident” for the first month. I struggled a lot when I came home. All the talk of me dying and then being able to walk out of the hospital really scared me. I didn’t want to go to sleep at night for fear that I wouldn’t wake up, I was always waiting for something to happen. Instead of being so appreciative of the second chance I was given, I worried constantly. My husband kept telling me I had been fixed, to stop worrying. Easier said than done. I was once 300 pounds and had lost over 150 pounds over the last 8 years by diet and exercise and in my mind, I was thinking I should have known this would eventually happen to me, I allowed myself to be so obese and this is what I did to myself.
One day about a month after my heart attack I was having a very bad day. I felt like no one could understand why I was feeling like this, and I was going into a serious funk, crying all the time. I went outside to check the mail and there was a book in my mailbox along with a very thoughtful note from my coworker. She loaned me your book and said it helped her and she thought she would share. I started reading it and put flags on things you wrote that just struck such a chord with me. I finally felt like what I am feeling is normal and I shouldn’t feel guilty for feeling the way I was.
Your statement in one chapter that said “Adversity will force you to face this trial, but you get to decide how to face it: either with courage and faith, or with fear and anxiety.” That was an aha moment for me. I decided to choose courage and faith. It was like someone flipped a switch in me. I decided to just focus on the positive and live in the moment, which I really never have. It has been such a shift. I credit your book for giving me the tools to work through it. I will be reading it a second time!
Thank you again for all the positivity your book holds.
